TL;DR — AI models are finally light enough and white-box switches are finally open enough to let us run a Tiny Llama inside the switch-stack itself. In a weekend GNS3 lab we proved the concept on SONiC-VS, then confirmed it will boot on Broadcom-based Edgecore hardware. The white-box market is already compounding >14 % CAGR, AIOps spend is doubling, and the first “smart-DPU” switches from Cisco and Juniper show the hyperscale end-state. AiOp.Net wants to help every network team join the ride, starting with an open repo and an invitation to co-create.
The networking world is having its “Raspberry Pi moment.” White-box hardware that once powered only cloud hyperscalers is now an affordable, open canvas — the global market will leap from $2.6 B in 2023 to $6.6 B by 2030 (14 % CAGR). (Global White Box Switches Market Research Report 2024) At the same time, AI models have shrunk from 70-billion-parameter giants to TinyLlama’s 1.1 B checkpoint you can run on a laptop-class CPU. (TinyLlama/TinyLlama-1.1B-Chat-v1.0 - Hugging Face) Put those curves together and something magical happens: the switch in your wiring closet can now think for itself.

• Models on a diet. NVIDIA’s Minitron project distilled Llama-3.1 8 B down to a 4 B edge model with minimal accuracy loss. (How to Prune and Distill Llama-3.1 8B to an ... - NVIDIA Developer) LlamaCon 2025 keynotes showed even leaner 1 B distillations headed to IoT. • Open NOS maturity. SONiC now ships weekly “VS” images that boot in QEMU or Docker, expose gNMI/REST, and mirror the exact dataplane APIs you get on hardware. (Hello World! Virtually - Getting Started with SONiC, SONiC (container) - containerlab) Dell and others are shipping enterprise-supported SONiC distros with 24 × 7 support. • Industry validation. Cisco just unveiled Nexus 9300 Smart Switches with embedded DPUs running security services on-box. (Cisco announces new Cisco N9300 Series Smart Switches for Data ...) Juniper re-branded its entire wired, wireless, and DC stack as an AI-Native Networking Platform. (Juniper Networks Unveils Industry's First AI-Native ... - Newsroom)
• Money follows AI-Ops. AIOps spend will nearly triple to $32 B by 2028 (22.7 % CAGR). (AIOps Platform Market Size & Trends, Growth Analysis, Industry ...) Forbes calls AI “the heat source reshaping the 2025 networking market.” (Why AI Will Continue To Heat Up The Networking Market in 2025: Pt. 1)
We stood up a virtual campus in GNS3 using the official SONiC-VS QCOW2 image, wired two virtual switches together, and dropped a TinyLlama container right inside the NOS Docker fabric. The agent translated “Put guest Wi-Fi on VLAN 30” into a gNMI JSON patch, SONiC committed it, and Trident-3’s software ASIC emulator flipped the ports in <100 ms. Every telemetry counter streamed back to the model for closed-loop verification.
Why it matters: if it runs in VS, it runs on iron. And Edgecore’s EPS201 (AS4630-54TE) is iron we can actually buy for ~$3.7 k — 48×1 G plus 25/100 G uplinks, shipping with ONIE and confirmed SONiC builds.
